A Co-operative Society

The Leitrim Organic Farmers Co-op works continuously with other regional, national and international bodies to promote organic production. We are involved with the following projects and initiatives:
  • The The National Organic Training Skillnet (NOTS) provides high quality, low cost training for the expanding organic sector throughout the Republic of Ireland. Courses will be available throughout the country and our training co-ordinators are based in Leitrim, Galway and Carlow.
  • The Western Organic Strategic Initiative (WOSI) is an umbrella initiative of organic organisations in the North West of Ireland. This initiative is funded by the Western Development Commission (WDC).
  • The Western Organic Network (WON) grew out of the Western Organic Strategic Initiative. It was set up in 2003 to provide training for the organic sector in the North West, funded by Skillnets, and is based in the Leitrim Organic Farmers' Co-op office in Drumshanbo. Since January 2006 it has been funded as an Accel Programme and has extended its activities into the Western region. It can provide customised training for existing and aspiring organic producers in the counties of Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cavan, Longford, Galway, Clare and Mayo. Interested parties outside the region are also welcome to participate in courses.
  • Atlantic Organics is another partner company, set up in 2004, which grew out of WOSI. The office is based at the Organic Centre in Rossinver, Co. Leitrim. It is contracted to develop value-added organic artisan foods using local organic produce.
  • The Organic Centre in Rossinver, Co. Leitrim, was set up in 2005 to provide full-time training in all aspects of organic horticulture, and has a full programme of short courses on many areas of organic production and sustainable living. Its demonstration gardens, eco-shop and organic cafe are open to visitors.
  • North West Organics (NWO) is a cross-Border organic co-operative with offices in North Donegal and Derry. It is involved in a number of joint initiatives with Leitrim Organic Farmers' Co-op.
  • The Organic Development Committee of the Department of Agriculture and Food deals with national policy in relation to organic farming in Ireland. The Co-op is represented on the Steering Group.
  • The Organic Producers Market Development Group is a farmer-based organisation of organic producer groups, organic certification bodies and other key groups who develop organic marketing strategies for Ireland. The group is mentored by An Bord Bia.
  • The Atlantic Arc Project is an INTERREG IIIB project which works with organic organisations throughout Europe.
